EPHRATA CLOISTERS Historic Ephrata, Pennsylvania
About Dan Welden, Dan's family ancestry discovered recently that on his Grandmother's side they are in-fact direct decedants to the original founder, Johann Conrad Beissel, born in 1649, a German pietist mystic.  Ephrata Cloisters was founded in 1732 in Lancaster County by Conrad Beissel, after he had lost both his mother and father to war.
About Melissa Strawser Melissa studied Printmaking at University College London, holding a 1st Degree, MA Printmaking from Slade School of Art.  Here she became a lifetime member of the British Museum,  British Museum's Print Room and The British Library, where Melissa completed a 10,000 word dissertation called 'Everyday Art' which was based on the original German copy of Martyr's Mirror book. The first printing press was known to the Ephrata Cloisters, and it was here that the second original copy of Martyr's Mirror was then published at the Ephrata Cloisters.  Martyr's Mirror is the most important documentation to the Amish and Mennonite communities to this day.
